Description: PMI states that "Project management is the practice of using knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to complete a series of tasks to deliver value and achieve a desired outcome" (PMI, 2022) Managers use project management as a way to define and reach project goals. When project management techniques and skills are used correctly than the project should have a defined scope and timeline. This allows for organization and a successful completion of a project.
My Leadership: Project management has shown me the importance of strong communication skills. Since learning more about the importance of communication I have been working to apply it in my approach to leadership.
Why is this Important?: This competency being included in my studies has allowed me to better understand leadership and how much more there is to learn. Project management teaches you skills that are not just good for in the work place. Having good communication, learning to identify risks, becoming a better listener, are all things included in this type of management and are all applicable in many areas of life.
My Growth and Development: Since being at ASU I have gained more insight to the kind of leader I am and the kind of leader I am working to become. Project Management has helped me see the level of admiration I have for leadership. From that I've become passionate about my own leadership and my journey. When I first started I was not focusing on my approach to leadership as I did not see the importance in it. I was way less confident in myself as a leader. As time as past I now am much more confident and excited to continue to grow as a leader by working on my approach and taking time to learn from others.
Competency Artifact: Something that I feel well represents a big accomplishment of mine is my POQ (partner of the quarter) pin. By winning this it meant many of my coworkers nominated me for this award. This was when I first became a shift supervisor. As I have continued to learn about project management I have been able to see how it has impacted my approach to leadership. This achievement gave me the motivation to continue to better my leadership.
