Description: Strategic planning is a tactic to help make a productive track for projects. The text says that "The right mixture of strategy, roles, relationships, and coordination is essential to collective performance" ( Bolman, pg. 48). Knowing your teams strengths helps to identify who is best fit for which role. Planning gives a visual road map towards success.
My Leadership: Strategic planning is involved in my leadership approach everyday. As a shift supervisor I plan the course for the day. Whether it is running breaks, plays or projects at work. This competency provides stability and well thought out plans for my day.
Why is this Important?: Being taught this has helped me personally view how I plan differently. Learning about this competency means that you can better prepare for projects and anything else. Strategic Planning is a way to ensure your time is being used efficiently.
My Growth and Development: In some ways I had applied strategic planning in my leadership approach but didn't know exactly just how helpful it could be. This competency has shown my the value in critical thinking and preparation before taking action. When I first started at ASU I had prepared very little and was less educated on the leadership approach. Now I am able to make better well thought out plans to help me be successful. Competency Artifact: In another one of my classes I had to complete a resource breakdown structure. Strategic planning has many tools that can be used to help plan efficiently. Using a resource breakdown structure was a great way to practice and identify the moving parts of a project. Completing this through excel was an achievement of mine.
